NEW RESEARCH BY LEADING CHARITY HIGHLIGHTS THE NEED TO WRITE A WILL

7/05/2010

Almost sixty (58%) per cent of adults have not made a Will, rising to a staggering 74 per cent of co-habiting adults, a new poll has revealed. The online YouGov poll was undertaken by children's charity Barnardo's who rely heavily on gifts left to them in Wills.

This new research is no surprise to Kings Court Trust Corporation.  As a company dedicated to estate administration, our ties with the Will writing sector are immense, such that we are aware of the huge numbers of new Wills that are made daily and monthly, but also the sheer number of people who are writing a Will for the first time.

The Barnardo’s poll further reveals that:

  • of those who have made a Will, a surprisingly savvy 61 per cent did so before the age of 41
  • more than one in five (22 per cent) cite having a child as a key driver
  • almost a quarter (23 per cent) state financial planning as the reason for writing a Will.

The good news is that the public is still very committed to leaving legacies in Wills. The Barnardo's report confirms previous research that one third of the public would consider leaving a gift in their Will to a charity as well as providing for family and friends.  This resonates well with Kings Court’s experience as we regularly see charities named as beneficiaries in Wills.  Our aim is always to administer an estate quickly so that the charity, along with all other beneficiaries, receives their money as soon as possible.
